The New Generation of Functional Materials: The Power of Hollow Fibers, Capillaries and Absorbents

When Science Transforms Industry

We live in a time where market demands are not limited only to product performance, but innovation is expected to be accompanied by environmental responsibility, scientific value and a positive impact on people’s daily lives, this being the time when textile materials engineering assumes a central role in companies’ growth and differentiation strategies.

In the search for the development of products with true added value, hollow, capillary and absorbent fibers represent a unique opportunity with remarkable potential for adaptation to different sectors, such as technical fashion, health, sport, mobility, construction and much more.

In this article, we invite you to discover these fibers not just as materials, but as strategic solutions for the future of your organization.

1. Lightweight Performance

The European Outdoor Group, together with brands such as The North Face, Mammut and Salewa, has been exploring hollow polyester fibers and polypropylene to develop high-performance thermal clothing, especially for alpine environments and military missions in extreme climates. Studies have shown that hollow fibers can increase thermal insulation capacity by up to 35%, maintaining lightness and compressibility, essential for mobility and comfort. Hollow fibers, when applied to non-woven blankets, are used as thermal and acoustic insulation in sustainable buildings and vehicles. Its structure improves: the thermal performance of walls and ceilings, the energy efficiency of homes and electric cars, sound absorption in driving cabins and interiors. Hollow ultrafiltration membranes: innovative approach to use hollow fibers in filtration membranes applied to the treatment of water produced by the oil industry. These fibers allow: high permeation flux, chemical and thermal resistance and high selectivity of particles and organic compounds. This type of application shows the potential of hollow fibers as key elements in clean technologies and the industrial circular economy. Phantoms with microcavities by replicating the porous structure of human tissues, hollow fibers are integrated into polymeric matrices to create realistic anatomical phantoms with behavior similar to soft tissues. They allow the simulation of fluid flow, compression and medical imaging, with great relevance in medical research and clinical teaching. Barber et al., Materials Today Bio, 2023.

Studies like that of Wang et al. (Textile Research Journal, 2021) prove that hollow polyester fibers can increase thermal resistance up to 40% without significant increase in weight or thickness of the fabric. Furthermore, nanotechnology studies are exploring hollow structures with multiple internal cavities, which improve mechanical and acoustic performance.

2. Intelligence in Moisture Management

Inspired by natural capillarity of plants, these fibers have microscopic channels that allow the efficient transport of liquids. They are the ideal choice for applications that require humidity control, quick drying and constant thermal comfort.

Technical, sports and hospital clothing: Technical fibers such as hollow hydrophobic polyester fibers combined with regenerated absorbent fibers have made it possible to develop materials for uniforms and surgical gowns that: facilitate the evaporation of sweat and prevent the accumulation of bacteria, guarantee thermal comfort in long shifts and controlled environments and increase the protective barrier against biological fluids. Fabrics for footwear, orthopedics and medical devices: the application of hollow fibers in technical insoles, linings and uppers allows: increased internal ventilation and lightness, Thermal insulation in mountain and ski footwear and heat management moisture and odor elimination (when combined with antimicrobial finishes). Examples include 3D Spacer fabrics with hollow fibers, used by Salomon and Asics in trail running footwear. The concept of capillary transport has been studied extensively by centers such as Hohenstein Institute and Technical University of Dresden, with performance tests based on DIN EN ISO 11092 (resistance to vapor transfer of water). Researchers such as Kim & Lee (2023) have demonstrated that textiles with hair fibers can reduce perceived body temperature by up to 2°C, a critical factor in sports performance and thermal comfort.

3. Functionality at the Service of Health, Hygiene and Wellbeing

absorbent fibers were designed to capture and retain large quantities of liquid, without compromising essential properties such as softness, breathability and flexibility, being fundamental in sectors such as health, personal hygiene, industrial cleaning, agriculture and environmental protection.

Biodegradable hospital dressings: The evolution of hospital dressings is directly linked to the need for advanced, functional and ecologically responsible solutions. The incorporation of natural and biodegradable absorbent fibers (such as regenerated cellulose, bamboo or PLA) with a capillary or hollow structure allows the creation of products that offer high clinical performance and reduced environmental impact. Desired properties: high capacity for absorption and retention of exudates, control of wound humidity and respiration (ideal moist environment for healing), reduction of dermal irritations and sensitizations, complete biodegradability, no microplastics or contaminating residues. Advances with technical fibers: Hollow PLA or viscose fibers treated with bioactive fillers offer: Absorption capacity greater than 1,000% of their weight, Integrated microbial barrier and Natural disintegration in hospital composting (< 120 days). In the industrial sector, the containment and recovery of oils and hydrocarbons in production environments is critical. Technical textiles made with hydrophobic hollow fibers (e.g. expanded polypropylene or treated polyester) offer selective absorption, i.e.: retain oils but repel water. Technical Characteristics High oleophilic capillarity, Buoyancy, Hollow internal structure for storage of absorbed oil, High reusability before saturation Source: Journal of Environmental Management, “Textile Solutions for Oil Spill Containment”, 2022.

Industrial Applications: Cleaning cloths for heavy machinery and automotive production lines, Floating barriers in containment basins or industrial ports and Disposable absorbent textiles with programmed biodegradability (with PLA or treated vegetable fibers). The use of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) in textile fibers has been widely explored by entities such as AATCC (American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists). In Portugal, CITEVE and CeNTI have developed projects in collaboration with industry to integrate functional cellulosic fibers and biopolymers into absorbent fabrics with a high degree of biodegradability.

A recent study published in the Journal of Applied Polymer Science demonstrated that PVA and PLA fibers with the addition of microchannels can absorb up to 15 times their weight in liquid, maintaining structure and integrity.
