Circular Innovation in Fashion: NIT-NITextile Shares your experience at UFC
May 16, 2025 – The Federal University of Ceará (UFC), in Brazil, this week welcomed Juliana Cruz, founder and CEO of NIT-NITextile, as a guest speaker at the Fashion Retail seminar of the Fashion Design course. The initiative, promoted by Professor Iara Braga, focused on the importance of the transition to sustainable and circular business and design models in the fashion industry.
During the talk, Juliana Cruz addressed the systemic transformations that fashion needs to face to respond to today’s environmental, social and economic challenges. The discussion started from a clear principle: sustainability is no longer an option, it is an urgent and transversal need.
In a world where Overshoot Day continues to come forward every year, and in which inequalities in access to resources are accentuated, fashion, one of the most influential and visible industries, has a decisive role to play. NIT-NItextile highlighted how circular models can reduce negative impacts, regenerate ecosystems and promote social justice, while creating new economic and innovation opportunities.
practical examples of circular design strategies were presented, such as the durability and repairability of products, the reuse of materials, creative reuse (upcycling), the elimination of toxic substances and the use of renewable resources. Another highlight was the development of digital product passports, which allow greater traceability, transparency and information to the consumer.
Juliana encouraged students to look at design not just as an aesthetic tool, but as a transformative instrument with ethical responsibility, capable of positively influencing the entire value chain, from raw materials to post-consumer.
